Edson Fachin seeks PGR opinion on Federal Police Director removal
Supreme Court President Edson Fachin has requested a formal opinion from the Prosecutor General's Office (PGR) regarding the leadership of the Federal Police (PF). This move follows a legal dispute over the preventive removal of Director-General Andrei Rodrigues and Intelligence Director Leandro Almada.
The controversy began when Justice André Mendonça ordered the removal of both officials, alleging that PF intelligence reports indicated illegal monitoring of Mendonça and Attorney General Jorge Messias. Mendonça also ordered criminal and administrative investigations into the production of these intelligence documents.
Andrei Rodrigues has denied the allegations, asserting that the intelligence reports were routine analyses provided to the Court in compliance with orders from Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The Attorney General's Office (AGU) has also challenged the removal, arguing that the appointment and dismissal of the PF Director-General is an exclusive prerogative of the President of the Republic.
Fachin had previously suspended Mendonça's decision to maintain stability within the institution while the merits of the case are reviewed. The PGR's upcoming opinion will be a critical step before the Supreme Court reaches a final decision on the status of the Federal Police leadership.
