Słupsk hospital to perform Poland's first Alzheimer's surgery

Doctors at the Wojewódzki Szpital Specjalistyczny in Słupsk, Poland, are set to perform the first surgical procedure of its kind in the country to combat Alzheimer's disease. Scheduled for October, the pioneering operation aims to improve the clinical condition of patients by enhancing the drainage of harmful metabolites, such as tau protein and amyloid, from the brain.

The surgical team, led by Dr. Daniel Maliszewski and supported by laryngologist Dr. Ewa Migacz, will utilize advanced microsurgical technology, including a microscope, ultra-sensitive ultrasound, and the Symani robot. The procedure will also employ indocyanine green dye lymphography to precisely locate lymphatic pathways.

To minimize risks such as postoperative delirium in neurological patients, surgeons aim to complete the procedure within three to four hours. While this method is intended to support rather than replace drug therapy, it represents a significant medical advancement following the 2017 discovery of the brain's lymphatic system. Neurologist Dr. Kamil Chwojnicki is overseeing the qualification of patients for the procedure.
