Surabaya reports illegal fees and a gas explosion
Authorities in Surabaya are investigating allegations of illegal levies regarding population administration services. Following viral social media reports, a resident in the Gunung Anyar area claimed they were asked to pay Rp 2 million to process a Family Card (KK) transfer. Irvan Wahyudradjad, Head of the Surabaya Population and Civil Registration Office (Dispendukcapil), clarified that all population administration services are free of charge and stated that the government is investigating the matter to identify those involved, including potential involvement from local neighborhood officials.
In a separate incident, a 12 kg LPG gas cylinder explosion occurred in the Kampung Kupang Segunting residential area on Monday morning. The blast, suspected to have been caused by a gas leak, damaged four houses. Two elderly residents, aged 69 and 82, sustained injuries including burns and impact from flying debris; both were evacuated to RSUD Dr. Soewandhie hospital. The Surabaya Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that one house suffered severe structural damage while three others sustained damage to walls and roofs.
