Surabaya student named suspect after fatal unassisted birth

A 24-year-old veterinary paramedic student, identified by the initials ALSU, has been named a suspect following a fatal incident in which she gave birth alone at a boarding house on Jalan Gubeng Kertajaya, Surabaya.

According to interrogation videos released by Surabaya Police Chief Kombes Luthfie Sulistiawan, the incident occurred on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. ALSU reported experiencing contractions around 8:00 AM, followed by the rupture of her amniotic sac and the subsequent delivery of the infant at approximately 2:00 PM. She stated that she placed the naked infant on the floor and used surgical scissors from her studies to cut the placenta.

The infant reportedly died due to dehydration and respiratory failure. ALSU, originally from Central Java, indicated that the pregnancy resulted from a relationship with a partner who had ceased communication with her in June and refused to take responsibility. She expressed regret for disappointing her parents, who were unaware of her pregnancy.
