Surabaya Zoo acquires first four Aldabra giant tortoises
Surabaya Zoo (KBS) has acquired four Aldabra giant tortoises, marking the first time the institution has housed this species. The tortoises were brought from Shizuoka, Japan, through a partnership with iZoo.
The group consists of one male and three females. The male weighs approximately 109 kilograms and is estimated to be 40 years old, while the three females weigh between 80 and 90 kilograms each and are aged between 25 and 30 years. Native to the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, these tortoises are among the largest land tortoises in the world.
The animals arrived in Indonesia in mid-July 2026 and completed mandatory quarantine and acclimatization before being presented to the public. This acquisition is the first phase of an expanded exchange program with iZoo, which is expected to include future transfers of Japanese macaques, giraffes, and red pandas to the facility.
