Surat fish market naming controversy involves PM Modi

A controversy has emerged in Surat, Gujarat, following the installation of a sign at a new wholesale fish market naming the facility after Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The board, located in the Lakkadkot area of Nanpura, features the Prime Minister’s name and photograph.

Some local fish traders have voiced opposition to the naming, arguing that because the Prime Minister is a strict vegetarian who does not consume seafood, his name should not be associated with a fish market. However, the Surat Fish Merchant Association (SFMA) defended the decision, noting that the central government provided 3 crore rupees for the project under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, a scheme launched by the Prime Minister.

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) clarified that the naming process has not been officially completed and the name is yet to be formally approved. Officials stated that the board was put up without an official resolution and that the SFMA has provided verbal assurance that the sign will be removed.
