Surat Floods Cause Deaths, Evacuations and Market Closures

Heavy monsoon rains on July 6‑8 2026 dumped roughly 18 inches of water on Surat, Gujarat, flooding four of the city’s five creeks and submerging both upscale neighbourhoods and low‑lying slums. The flooding triggered waterlogging, power outages and traffic disruptions, leading authorities to close schools and colleges on July 8 and evacuate more than 2,000 residents.

The extreme weather resulted in at least nine fatalities – victims of electrocution, falling trees and lightning – and forced the suspension of city, BRTS and state transport bus services.

The Federation of Surat Trade and Textile Associations shut the city’s textile markets, including the Poddar Arcade, where over 150 stalls were inundated. Preliminary estimates put commercial losses at over Rs 100 crore, with limited access granted only to traders requiring urgent entry to basement shops.
