Surat Floods Force Evacuation of 4,000 Residents Amid Monsoon Rains
Heavy monsoon rains on August 1‑2 2026 caused the Kim River in Surat, India, to swell dramatically, leading to widespread waterlogging, urban flooding, and severe disruptions across the district. Authorities issued a red alert, closed schools and factories, and evacuated more than 4,000 residents from flood‑prone villages. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units and the Indian Army were deployed, rescuing dozens of people and establishing relief shelters such as the one at Sunrise School in Kosamba.
Rescue operations also involved the Surat Municipal Corporation Fire and Emergency Services, which deployed special units to extract around 125 civilians from inundated neighborhoods. Roads, including the Gayakwadi road linking Kosamba and Kim, were submerged, forcing long detours for commuters.
Amid the crisis, a tragic murder‑suicide occurred in the Varachha area, and a pioneering medical effort saw a live human heart transported from Surat to Ahmedabad via the high‑speed Vande Bharat Express, marking the first organ transfer on India's rail network.
