Surat, Gujarat flood relief distributes aid and settles insurance claims

The Gujarat government has provided extensive relief to flood‑hit Surat following heavy rains on July 6‑7. Cash assistance of about ₹5.5 crore was given to 61,360 residents, while household aid of ₹14.82 crore reached 29,642 families, bringing total direct relief to roughly ₹20 crore. Additional support includes a ₹18 crore distribution to 54,000 individuals and 26,000 households, and a dedicated rehabilitation package for traders.

Insurance officials approved claims worth ₹29 crore for 5,287 policyholders, issuing cheques to claimants after a review led by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. The state also warned insurance firms to accelerate settlements and issued show‑cause notices to under‑performing companies.

Separate from the relief effort, recent rains have caused renewed waterlogging in several Surat neighbourhoods, highlighting ongoing drainage challenges, while the Surat‑Bilimora bullet‑train project reached 80 % completion, targeting a 2027 launch.
