Surfing Super League to launch inaugural season in 2028

The Surfing Super League (SSL) is preparing for its inaugural season in January 2028, marking a significant commercial shift in professional surfing. Led by CEO Chris Mater, a former Surfing Australia executive, the league aims to increase spectator engagement through a fast-paced, team-based format.

Drawing inspiration from successful sporting models like the Big Bash Cricket and the Indian Premier League, the SSL will feature eight teams competing in an eight-week summer series. Unlike traditional four-day World Surf League events, SSL “games” will consist of two 40-minute halves with a ten-minute break. Each game will involve four teams of four surfers, with a specific structure where a female surfer acts as the power surfer in the first half and a male surfer in the second.

Mater emphasizes that television coverage and strategic scheduling are vital to the league's success. To maximize viewership and sponsorship, the SSL plans to broadcast during peak weekend hours, specifically from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
