Surinam Airways partners with Eastern Airlines for Amsterdam route
Surinam Airways (SLM) has entered a two-year damp lease agreement with the American carrier Eastern Airlines to operate its Mid-Atlantic route between Paramaribo and Amsterdam. Starting October 4, the airline will transition from the four-engine Airbus A340-600, previously operated via Universal Sky Carrier (USC), to a two-engine Boeing 777-200ER.
The shift is primarily driven by the need for cost control and operational efficiency. By moving to a twin-engine aircraft, SLM aims to significantly reduce fuel consumption, which is one of its largest expenses. This transition is part of a broader recovery and future-proofing plan as the airline navigates financial and operational challenges. The Surinamese government has been providing substantial financial support, including approximately $2 million USD per month.
Under the damp lease arrangement, Eastern Airlines will provide the aircraft, cockpit crew, and technical maintenance, while SLM cabin crew will work alongside Eastern Airlines staff. While the initial aircraft is a temporary solution, the contract stipulates that by December 2026, a Boeing 777-200ER featuring full Surinam Airways livery must be deployed.
