Suriname addresses utility challenges in Paramaribo and Sunny Point
In Paramaribo-Noord, VHP Member of Parliament Kishan Ramsukul has called for clarity regarding persistent electricity and water shortages. Ramsukul noted unpredictable power outages, often lasting exactly three hours without prior notice, raising concerns about potential load shedding and the capacity of Energiebedrijven Suriname (EBS) to meet growing demand. Additionally, residents have faced low water pressure or total loss of service for over a week, with questions raised regarding the Blauwgrond pumping station.
In a separate development, President Jennifer Simons and Surinaamsche Waterleiding Maatschappij (SWM) Director Clifton Lienga officially inaugurated the drinking water system in Sunny Point. This restores a service that had been interrupted since 2019. President Simons emphasized that access to clean water is a fundamental right for Surinamese citizens and must take priority over commercial interests. To facilitate the rollout, residents can register using only their identity cards, and individual taps will be installed at each building to manage usage and payments.
