Suriname advances healthcare through digital transformation and regional cooperation

Suriname is implementing several strategic initiatives to modernize its healthcare system and address regional health challenges. The Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport, in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), is conducting a mission to strengthen digital health data exchange. This effort aims to transition from fragmented paper records to a unified 'one patient, one file' digital system based on international standards.

On a regional level, Suriname and French Guiana are seeking closer cooperation to manage environmental and health issues along the Marowini River. Key topics include mercury pollution from gold mining, waste management near Maripasoula, and improving medical facilities in eastern Suriname. Discussions also involve enhancing cooperation between the University Medical Center of French Guiana and the Marwina Hospital, as well as joint efforts to combat the chikungunya mosquito.

Additionally, health authorities have announced large-scale tuberculosis screening plans for detention centers, such as the Santo Boma facility. This follows the admission of a TB patient from detention to a sanatorium. The Tuberculosis Program intends to coordinate with the Correctional Officers Corps (KPA) to conduct skin tests and contact tracing to prevent further spread in high-density correctional environments.
