Suriname Agriculture Minister warns farmers over pesticide use

Suriname’s Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Mike Noersalim, has urged farmers to strictly adhere to pesticide regulations to ensure food safety and protect the nation’s agricultural reputation. Speaking during the annual Farmers' Day commemoration at the Kwattam Market, Noersalim emphasized that farmers hold a significant responsibility for the quality of produce consumed by the population.

The Minister warned that violations of pesticide guidelines will result in consequences, as improper use can harm consumer health, crops, the environment, and biodiversity. He also noted that compliance is essential for strengthening the competitiveness of Surinamese products in international markets.

To maintain food integrity, the Ministry of LVV plans to take measures against those who ignore regulations. Additionally, the ministry is working on improving farmer education through training and workshops, while also addressing organizational changes and increasing oversight responsibilities for ministry staff.
