Suriname and China seek to deepen strategic partnership
Suriname and China are seeking to deepen their diplomatic ties and transition their 50-year relationship into more concrete projects and results. During a meeting at the presidential palace, President Jennifer Simons met with a 14-member delegation from the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), led by Vice Chairman Bater.
Participants included Foreign Affairs Minister Melvin Bouva and Chinese Ambassador Lin Ji. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across various sectors, including trade, infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, healthcare, education, and technology. President Simons highlighted that the upcoming offshore oil industry presents significant opportunities to strengthen economic ties.
Suriname aims to foster more trade and investment relations, promote business connections between the two nations, and improve access for Surinamese products to the Chinese market. The partnership is also viewed as a tool for economic diversification and human capital development through technology transfer and local employment initiatives. President Simons reaffirmed Suriname’s long-standing commitment to the ‘One-China Principle,’ which has been a pillar of their relations since 1976.
