Suriname and Guyana pursue economic ties via energy and infrastructure
Suriname and Guyana are preparing for a new round of bilateral negotiations focused on energy, natural resources, and cross-border infrastructure. Guyanese President Irfaan Ali indicated that a framework is already in place to guide these discussions, which are expected to take place in Guyana soon.
A primary focus of the cooperation is the energy sector, specifically the potential linking of Suriname’s gas resources to a proposed gas project in Berbice, Guyana. This could involve a pipeline to transport Surinamese gas, potentially expanding industrial activities and energy processing in the region. Additionally, Guyana plans to develop a deep-water port intended to serve both domestic and Surinamese markets.
Infrastructure projects, such as a proposed bridge over the Corantijn River, remain central to the agenda to facilitate the movement of goods and people. To support such large-scale developments, Suriname’s 2027 National Debt Plan outlines approximately USD 850 million in planned domestic and foreign financing. This includes USD 239 million in Chinese financing specifically earmarked for the construction of the bridge between Suriname and Guyana.
