Suriname and Guyana trade relations strained by rice and banana disputes

Trade relations between Suriname and Guyana are facing tension due to disputes involving agricultural products. An entrepreneur, Bhagwatpersad Ramadhin, has decided to return a shipment of nearly 385 tons of broken rice from Guyana to its country of origin after Surinamese authorities blocked the import.

Despite having Guyanese documentation and adhering to CARICOM trade agreements, the shipment was held in Nickerie because it lacked the necessary phytosanitary permits from the Surinamese Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries. The delay resulted in significant financial strain, with shipping costs reaching approximately US$ 35,000 and additional daily costs of US$ 5,000. To prevent further losses, Ramadhin withdrew his legal action against the state and requested to return the vessel, MV Valk.

This incident coincides with a separate trade barrier where Guyana has banned the import of Surinamese bananas. While there is no direct evidence linking the two issues, the combined challenges highlight difficulties in navigating regional trade regulations and permit requirements despite CARICOM membership.
