Suriname police seize over two tonnes of suspected cyanide

Police in Suriname have intercepted a large shipment of suspected cyanide at the Burnside checkpoint in Coronie. The cargo, weighing more than two tonnes, was being transported in two trucks.

Authorities believe the material was illegally smuggled into Suriname from Guyana. Preliminary information suggests the shipment may have entered the country via a pier in Nickerie before being transported toward Paramaribo. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the transport, though their specific roles are still under investigation.

Officials are working to confirm the exact chemical composition of the substance and determine if any import permits were in place. The seizure comes amid increased government scrutiny of cyanide imports due to its high risk to human health and the environment, particularly within the gold mining sector.
