Suriname begins construction of 350 social homes in Reeberg

President Jennifer Simons and Minister Stephen Tsang have officially launched the construction of 350 social housing units in Reeberg, Suriname. The project is a donation from the Chinese government and its people, aimed at addressing the country's acute housing shortage.

Construction is expected to be completed within two years, with a total project duration of four years to include a two-year maintenance period by the contractor. The homes are designated for socially vulnerable households. To support broader housing accessibility, the Surinamese government has reserved SRD 250 million for the Housing Construction Fund in 2026, offering mortgage loans with interest rates of 3, 5, and 7 percent.

In addition to providing shelter, President Simons emphasized that the project serves as an opportunity for local workers to gain technical knowledge and experience in the construction sector. The government is also responsible for preparing land and providing essential infrastructure, including electricity, water, internet, and access roads, to minimize costs for citizens.
