Suriname coalition faces internal tension amid economic pressure

Political tensions are rising within Suriname’s governing coalition as ABOP leader Ronnie Brunswijk claims that major decisions are being made unilaterally, bypassing coalition partners. In response, PL leader Paul Somohardjo maintains that he has a good relationship with all parties and that weekly meetings are occurring without issue.

These internal disputes coincide with significant economic challenges. According to the Central Bank of Suriname, inflation was approximately 8.0 percent on an annual basis in August 2026. While lower than earlier in the year, the cost of living remains high for citizens.

Furthermore, the International Monetary Fund noted in May that while Suriname has passed essential laws for managing future oil revenues, implementation remains incomplete due to limited institutional capacity, delayed regulations, and insufficient political involvement. Critics argue that political maneuvering regarding appointments and influence may be undermining the administrative preparation needed for the country’s upcoming oil and gas wealth.
