Suriname commemorates 173 years of Chinese immigration
Suriname is commemorating 173 years of Chinese immigration, marking the anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese contract laborers on October 20, 1853. To honor this history, a Friendship Pavilion was unveiled at Friendship Park on Jaggernath Lachmonstraat.
The unveiling ceremony was organized by the Suriname Chinese United Association (SCUA) and attended by President Jennifer Simons. In her address, President Simons highlighted the courage, work ethic, and values of the Chinese community, noting that they have become an integral part of Suriname’s national identity, economy, and culture.
The Progressive Reform Party (VHP) also recognized the occasion, expressing appreciation for the Chinese community’s contributions to entrepreneurship, trade, education, and social services.
