Suriname concludes inaugural national Heritage Month

Suriname has officially concluded its first national Heritage Month with a closing ceremony at the Mama Sranan monument. The event featured cultural performances, prayers, and tributes at the Migrant Monument and the Mama Sranan monument to celebrate the nation's diverse cultural identity.

Rachel Pinas, chair of the presidential working group for Heritage Month 2026, emphasized that heritage extends beyond physical monuments and historical buildings. She urged citizens to preserve intangible heritage, such as daily traditions, stories, proverbs, and wisdom passed down through generations within families and communities.

Parliament Speaker Ashwin Adhin described the initiative, established by President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, as a great success that fostered mutual recognition and appreciation among Suriname's various population groups. However, observers noted that while the month provided symbolic recognition, long-term preservation requires structural policies to protect, document, and teach cultural heritage beyond ceremonial events.
