Suriname confronts growing bromfiets safety crisis after fatal crash and suspected arson fire
On Friday, a bromfietser was killed in a traffic accident in Suriname, underscoring a persistent problem of road safety for low‑cost motorbikes. The incident adds to dozens of families affected each year and has prompted calls for mandatory basic training, safety certification, helmet use and a national safety culture for bromfiets riders.
Earlier this week, a house on Mon Souciweg in Santo Boma, Suriname, was largely destroyed by a blaze that investigators suspect may have been deliberately set. The fire originated in a storage area where three bromfietsen were kept, then spread to the residence. Police have not confirmed arson, and a resident has alleged that an ex‑partner could be responsible.
