Suriname Defense insurance card renewals face delays

Surinamese defense personnel are facing difficulties accessing healthcare due to the inability to renew their defense insurance cards. Despite previous agreements with the Staatsziekenfonds (SZF), individuals with expired cards are being told that renewals are currently on hold, causing concern for those dependent on the coverage.

Minister of Defense Uraiqit Ramsaran stated that the SZF director had reportedly given permission for automatic renewals, but noted that service providers are causing issues during implementation. Ramsaran emphasized that healthcare services for insured individuals must continue uninterrupted.

The Ministry of Defense is currently negotiating a more comprehensive insurance package with better secondary benefits, aiming to reach concrete agreements before October. While the ministry is working on these improvements, financial matters are being coordinated through the Ministry of Finance and Planning. Although there have been anonymous reports regarding payment arrears from armed services to the SZF, the Minister has not confirmed if such arrears are the cause of the current renewal issues.
