Suriname Defense Minister announces military reforms
Suriname’s Minister of Defense, Uraiqit Ramsaran, has announced a series of internal reforms aimed at strengthening the defense organization from within. Key priorities include improving military nutrition, addressing maintenance backlogs in barracks, and enhancing working conditions.
Responding to criticism regarding the quality and portion sizes of meals, Ramsaran stated that while lunch improvements have already been implemented, the ministry is now focusing on evening meals. The goal is to move beyond simple bread-based meals to provide more variety and nutritional value, including the use of fresh vegetables from the defense organization’s own agricultural facilities. Improvements to evening meals are expected to begin within a week.
Additionally, the minister addressed significant maintenance backlogs within military infrastructure. Following a visit to the Ayoko barracks, Ramsaran indicated that contractors are being engaged to begin phased repairs, prioritizing facilities essential for training and operational readiness. The broader strategy focuses on self-sufficiency and strengthening the internal capacity of the defense force.
