Suriname education sector faces teacher and classroom shortages

Preparations for the 2026–2027 school year in Suriname are facing significant challenges due to chronic shortages of teachers, classrooms, and furniture. Acting President Gregory Rusland has urged Minister Dirk Currie to expedite outstanding matters to ensure an orderly start to the academic year.

The education sector is struggling with structural issues, including increasing student numbers and a growing demand for qualified personnel. Teachers have expressed concerns regarding high workloads and low job satisfaction, suggesting that better pay is necessary to retain staff and attract those who have left the profession for other sectors.

In addition to personnel and infrastructure deficits, there are concerns regarding student placement and transportation. While many students have been assigned places, others may require long-distance transport to attend school. Overcrowded classrooms, sometimes exceeding 40 students in spaces designed for 25, are also threatening the quality of education.
