Suriname energy company EBS faces calls for leadership dismissal
Calls for the immediate dismissal of the management at Energiebedrijven Suriname (EBS) are intensifying following persistent electricity shortages and power outages in areas such as North Paramaribo. Analysts and economists have criticized the leadership of Director Leo Brunswijk, citing mismanagement and a failure to secure necessary investments for the country's power infrastructure.
Observer R. Pinas described the situation as “shamefully bad management,” noting that residents face high electricity costs despite frequent, prolonged outages that are distinct from scheduled load shedding. Pinas characterized the company as the “most antisocial company in Suriname” due to the financial burden placed on citizens amidst service instability.
Economist Winston Ramautarsing also called for Brunswijk’s replacement, arguing that the director has failed to strengthen the company or prepare it for future challenges over his four-year tenure. Ramautarsing pointed to a lack of strategic coordination with the government and criticized the prioritization of subsidies for the Surinamese national airline (SLM) and overseas embassies over vital investments in the electricity supply.
