Suriname energy crisis intensifies due to capacity shortages

Suriname is facing a significant energy crisis characterized by electricity shortages and unpredictable power outages. The state-owned utility, Elektriciteitsmaatschappij Suriname (EBS), has reported that it is unable to meet demand during hot days due to capacity constraints and delayed maintenance on several generators. This delay in maintenance poses a risk of financial penalties from manufacturers and increases the likelihood of system failures.

During peak hours, the power deficit is estimated to exceed 30 megawatts. The shortage is impacting various sectors, particularly retail and hospitality, causing economic damage. In response, the Suriname Energy Chamber (SEC) held an emergency meeting with the Energy Authority Suriname (EAS), EBS, and private sector representatives to discuss structural solutions.

To mitigate the crisis, the private sector is looking toward investing in solar energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to achieve partial self-sufficiency. Meanwhile, stakeholders are calling for increased investment in generation capacity and more transparent data regarding EBS's operational capabilities and annual reports.
