Suriname enhances water management through digital climate data training

Suriname is enhancing its climate adaptation capabilities through specialized training in data-driven water management and hydro-climatological information. From August 24 to 28, officials from the Ministries of Natural Resources, Public Works and Spatial Planning, and Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries participated in a program organized by the Integrated Water Management department.

In collaboration with the Belgian organization HAEDES BV under the VIKAP project, the training focused on utilizing digital technology and climate data for policy and decision-making. A cloud-based Decision Support System (DSS) was introduced to aggregate data on precipitation, temperature, river discharge, and soil moisture. This system aims to improve the monitoring of risks such as flooding and drought.

The project also features the miraX / VIKAP platform, which integrates measurement stations, time series, and Geographic Information System (GIS) maps into a user-friendly interface. This data infrastructure is intended to support the development of climate-driven micro-hydropower turbines for sustainable energy production.
