Suriname exits chikungunya epidemic phase

Suriname has moved out of the epidemic phase for chikungunya, according to the Bureau voor Openbare Gezondheidszorg (BOG). Stephanie Cheuk A Lam, acting head of the Environmental Inspection at the BOG, stated that both laboratory-confirmed and symptom-based cases have significantly declined.

While the disease is now considered endemic and continues to circulate, it is no longer at a level causing major concern. Cases are still being recorded in Paramaribo and Brokopondo, with only sporadic reports in other districts. The BOG clarified that recent social media images suggesting a new outbreak are actually old footage from June.

Health officials warn that the decline does not mean preventive measures should be abandoned. The BOG emphasizes that mosquito spraying is only a temporary solution and urges citizens to eliminate breeding sites in stagnant water, such as flowerpots, vases, and water reservoirs, especially as the dry season approaches. Residents experiencing fever, joint pain, pain behind the eyes, or skin rashes are advised to seek medical attention.
