Suriname expands port infrastructure and offshore bidding for oil and gas growth
Suriname is accelerating its infrastructure and exploration efforts to support a burgeoning oil and gas sector. NV Havenbeheer Suriname is planning a major expansion of the Jules Sedney Terminal to accommodate increased maritime traffic. The project includes constructing a new 140-meter quay, followed by an additional 120-meter extension, and expanding the storage area by 7.1 hectares, with both phases targeted for completion by September 2027. To improve efficiency, the port is collaborating with the Inter-American Development Bank to implement a Port Community System (PCS) and is investing in digitalization and local workforce training.
Simultaneously, Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N. V. has received its fifth offshore proposal through its Open-Door procedure, specifically for the SHO West area in Sector 1. This has triggered a 90-day competitive bidding window for qualified energy companies. This surge in interest follows the ongoing development of the GranMorgu project in Block 58, where TotalEnergies, APA Corporation, and Staatsolie are working toward the commencement of commercial oil production in the first half of 2028.
