Suriname expands port logistics to support offshore energy growth
Suriname is navigating a critical economic transition as it balances the rapid development of its offshore oil and gas sectors with the necessity of digital transformation. While the energy sector offers significant potential for capital, infrastructure, and employment, experts warn against the risks of resource dependency and economic instability seen in other oil-producing nations. To ensure sustainable growth, the country must prioritize economic diversification and address existing gaps in digital infrastructure caused by a lack of long-term strategy.
In support of these offshore ambitions, the Suriname Port Management Company (SPMC) is expanding its logistical capabilities at the Port of Paramaribo. The port recently reached a milestone in the supply and transshipment of offshore equipment, utilizing specialized storage areas to support upcoming maritime activities. The SPMC is currently providing logistical support to Medserv, which serves as a shorebase operator for offshore operations, managing the handling, storage, and distribution of essential equipment. This expansion of port facilities is intended to meet the increasing demand for logistics and storage as offshore energy activities in Surinamese waters continue to grow.
