Suriname faces fiscal deficit amid signs of economic recovery

Suriname is experiencing a mixed economic landscape in 2026, characterized by signs of recovery alongside significant fiscal challenges. According to the Suriname Economic Oversight Board (SEOB), economic activity has accelerated, with the Monthly Economic Activity Index rising from 7.7% in January to 9.6% in April. Inflation has also trended downward, falling from 10.4% in June to 8.9% in July, while international reserves strengthened to approximately USD 2.0 billion, providing a robust buffer with 8.2 months of import cover.

However, government finances have deteriorated sharply. In May 2026, the Surinamese government recorded a deficit of SRD 3.6 billion. This was driven by a significant drop in total government revenue, which fell from SRD 6.8 billion in April to SRD 4.4 billion in May, and a simultaneous rise in expenditures from SRD 5.5 billion to SRD 8 billion. The increased spending is attributed to essential costs in healthcare and social services. The SEOB warns that high national debt and liquidity developments remain critical risks to the country's economic stability.
