Suriname faces potential loadshedding in EBS-EPAR power grid

Reports of imminent loadshedding within the EBS-EPAR power supply area have caused significant social unrest in Suriname. The affected regions include Paramaribo, Wanica, Para, Brokopondo, Commewijne, Saramacca, and parts of Coronie. The EPAR network serves the majority of the country's households, institutions, and businesses.

Critics argue that official explanations regarding the shortage of available generation capacity and rising electricity consumption are incomplete or insufficiently supported by operational data. There are calls for the government, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Energy Authority, EBS, the Suriname Energy Chamber, and the SPCS to provide a joint, data-driven analysis.

Consumers are requesting a clear indicative shedding schedule with specific time slots to understand when outages will occur in their neighborhoods. Concerns have been raised that public communication has focused disproportionately on increased consumption rather than the structural availability of production capacity and historical underinvestment in infrastructure.
