Suriname faces scrutiny over detainee medical care and police brutality

Concerns are mounting in Suriname regarding the state's responsibility for the medical care of detainees. Legal experts and advocates highlight a structural failure in providing necessary physical and mental healthcare to those in custody, noting that delays in medical attention can lead to severe health complications and hinder rehabilitation.

A specific case has brought these issues to the forefront involving a suspect, Farly P., who was detained in connection with a theft investigation. His lawyer, Mr. D. Veira, has petitioned the examining magistrate for his immediate release following allegations of severe physical abuse by officers from the Regio Bijstand Team at the Keizerstraat police station.

According to the petition, the suspect was allegedly assaulted with an iron pipe by four officers, resulting in a triple fracture to his shin. The defense claims that medical treatment was delayed for several days following the incident and that the suspect continues to face difficulties accessing the specialist care required for his injuries.
