Suriname family visits Ghazipur to trace ancestral roots

A family from Suriname has traveled to Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, to trace their ancestral lineage after 132 years. John Mohanlal Ramanandanlal and Sharda Ramanandanlal visited Khanpur village and Varanasi to fulfill the lifelong dream of their 70-year-old father.

The family is utilizing historical records and scientific methods, including submitting DNA samples to Professor Gyaneshwer Chaubey at Gyan Lab, to verify their ancestry. Historical documents indicate that their ancestors, Ramanandan and Rajvantiya, were residents of Khanpur village and belonged to the Kayastha community.

In 1894, Ramanandan and Rajvantiya departed from Calcutta for Paramaribo, Suriname, aboard the British ship ‘Ames’ as indentured labourers. Following an 89-day voyage, they arrived in Suriname and were employed at the ‘Waterloo’ plantation in the Nickerie district. The family's current surname, ‘Ramnandanlal’, was officially adopted by their son, Jaykaram, in 1934.
