Suriname: Fatal shooting in Brokopondo leads to suspect assault

A fatal shooting occurred on Thursday afternoon, October 22, in the Snesi Bergi area near Sarakreek in the Brokopondo district of Suriname. The incident, reportedly stemming from a heated dispute between gold miners, resulted in the death of one man. Witnesses indicated that a confrontation preceded the gunfire. The suspect also attempted to attack a second individual during the incident, though that person managed to escape unharmed.

The Korps Politie Suriname and its Capital Crimes Department have launched a high-priority investigation into the shooting. Following the incident, the suspect reportedly flew from the interior to the Zorg en Hoop airport, where he was allegedly assaulted by citizens while in custody. Social media footage appears to show the suspect bound and restrained during the encounter. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the assault and the conduct of the officers present at the airport.

The incident has caused significant shock within the local community, raising concerns regarding safety and the regulation of gold mining activities in the region, which often operate in legal gray areas.
