Suriname football players face suspensions after Guatemala match
Three players from the Suriname national men's football team have reportedly been suspended for one match each following a match against Guatemala on October 5. According to Guatemalan media, the suspended players are goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen, reserve goalkeeper Jahnilo Wiegel-Triebel, and attacker Richonell Margaret.
Incidents occurred at the Estadio Manuel Felipe Carrera following the match. Margaret received a red card during the second half after allegedly responding to racist abuse from the crowd with an obscene gesture. Reports also indicate confrontations between players and staff members after the final whistle, involving Vaessen. Additionally, Wiegel-Triebel's suspension is linked to an alleged action involving an unknown substance near a goalpost.
Suriname's head coach, Henk Fraser, has condemned the events, specifically highlighting the discrimination faced by players. Fraser noted that while Suriname has filed an official protest with Concacaf, there has been little progress on the matter. He criticized attempts to shift blame onto the Surinamese players, suggesting the situation is being framed as if they were the instigators.
