Suriname government criticized over state-owned enterprise oversight

VHP parliamentary leader Asiskumar Gajadien has raised concerns in Suriname's National Assembly regarding the government's management and oversight of state-owned enterprises. Gajadien argued that the government, acting as a shareholder, lacks clear direction and effective supervision over critical parastatal institutions.

Several essential service providers were highlighted as facing structural issues, including the Surinaamse Luchtvaart Maatschappij (SLM), Energie Bedrijven Suriname (EBS), Surinaamsche Waterleiding Maatschappij (SWM), and the Telecommunicatie Autoriteit Suriname (TAS). The SLM, in particular, reportedly remains heavily dependent on state support, with discussions regarding approximately USD 2 million in monthly government assistance.

Critics noted that failures in management and planning at companies like EBS affect the daily lives of citizens by impacting access to electricity, water, and telecommunications. Gajadien emphasized that the government must move beyond merely appointing directors and instead develop a clear strategy for oversight to ensure these vital services remain reliable.
