Suriname government issues land titles to over 900 residents in Wanica
More than 900 residents of Wanica received official land titles during a ceremony held on October 30, 2026. Representing President Jennifer Simons, Minister Melvin Bouva announced that the government intends to link land issuance more closely to a comprehensive national housing policy. This strategy includes providing affordable housing financing, preparing plots for construction, and developing essential infrastructure such as roads, water, and electricity.
The government is also working to modernize the legal framework for land matters to ensure faster processing of applications and increased legal certainty for citizens. Efforts are underway to improve the legal position of land leaseholders and to combat land speculation by requiring that issued land be put to actual use.
Additionally, officials stated they will evaluate land conversions from the 2020–2025 period, specifically focusing on transfers of state land to companies and foundations that lack demonstrable social benefits. Minister ad interim of Land Policy and Forest Management, Uraiqit Ramsaran, acknowledged significant backlogs in the land administration and emphasized that digitalization and modernization are necessary to provide more transparent and efficient services to citizens.
