Suriname honors cultural icon Borger Breeveld

A public memorial service, ‘Celebrate Borger’, was held at the Congreshal to honor the life and legacy of Borger Breeveld, a prominent Surinamese actor, filmmaker, and cultural icon. The event was organized by Breeveld’s family in collaboration with the Cabinet of the President.

President Jennifer Simons attended the ceremony, describing Breeveld as a figure “inseparably connected to the soul of Suriname” and a pioneer who helped shape modern Surinamese identity through his work. His performances in films such as ‘Wan Pipel’ and ‘Kon Esi Baka’ were highlighted as significant contributions that brought international attention to the country’s cinema.

The memorial included musical tributes, including a performance of Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’ by Breeveld’s daughter, Aisha Breeveld. Following the program at the Congreshal, attendees gathered at Independence Square to light candles in his memory. Breeveld passed away on August 10 at the age of 82 in the Netherlands.
