Suriname implements new environmental enforcement rules and fines

The government of Suriname has implemented new regulations to empower environmental inspectors to combat pollution and illegal waste dumping. Under these measures, inspectors have been appointed as special police officers, granting them the authority to issue official reports when violations are detected.

Prosecutor General Garcia Paragsingh has ratified an official fine schedule for various environmental and public order offenses. Fines range from SRD 1,000 to SRD 10,000 depending on the violation. Specific offenses subject to penalties include:

• Illegal dumping of waste. • Failure to maintain private plots or roadside verges. • Leaving car wrecks or vehicle parts on public roads. • Improperly managing weeds, shrubs, and debris around residences. • Unsafe lighting on public roads or unauthorized fires on unbuilt land.

The Public Prosecution Service has urged citizens to comply with these legal requirements to ensure a clean and safe living environment.
