Suriname Indigenous Communities Petition Parliament over River Fish Kill

Indigenous and Tribal villages along the Saramaccariver in Suriname presented a petition to the National Assembly (DNA) on 9 July 2026. The petition, read by village captain Joan van der Bosch of Pikin Poika, warned of massive fish deaths they attribute to river contamination, threatening water, food, income and cultural practices.

The petitioners demand an independent scientific investigation, full transparency of results, compensation for affected villages, preventive measures against future incidents, and permanent involvement of Indigenous and Tribal communities in decisions affecting their lands. DNA member Drs. Rabind Parmessar noted that water samples have been sent abroad for analysis and that the Assembly and government are monitoring the situation. He said the findings will guide further action in cooperation with all stakeholders. The appeal cites internationally recognised collective rights to a healthy environment and non‑discrimination, urging the state to act urgently to protect the communities’ livelihood and health.
