Suriname installs Maritime Security Council to bolster sea safety

Suriname has officially installed its Maritime Security Council to strengthen coordination and safety within the nation's maritime sector. During the installation ceremony at the President's Cabinet, President Jennifer Simons emphasized that maritime security is a collective responsibility. She noted that the success of the council depends on all involved agencies contributing their expertise, rather than relying solely on the council's chairman, Bob Mangal.

The council brings together several key institutions, including the Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS), the Navy, the Coast Guard, the Suriname Police Force (KPS), the National Security Advisor, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the Ministry of Justice and Security.

Chairman Bob Mangal stated that the council's focus will be on coordinating, inspecting, and monitoring maritime activities to ensure the country remains compliant with international regulations and avoids being blacklisted by the international community. Justice Minister Harish Monorath, acting also as interim Minister of Transport, Communication, and Tourism, indicated that the next steps involve operationalizing the council's tasks to contribute to the country's development.
