Suriname intensifies enforcement of outstanding judicial fines
Suriname's Dienst Executie Strafvonnissen (DES) has intensified nationwide enforcement of outstanding, irrevocable judicial sentences. Authorities are conducting large-scale traffic controls on roads and targeted inspections at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport to ensure citizens fulfill their legal financial obligations.
At the airport, passengers with outstanding fines are required to settle their debts before being permitted to continue their travels. During road inspections, individuals facing unpaid fines are given the immediate opportunity to pay the state to avoid potential substitute prison sentences.
To improve accessibility and reduce administrative pressure, the DES has introduced a digital verification service. Citizens can now check their legal status via an official WhatsApp channel rather than visiting an office in person. Payments can be processed electronically via POS or in cash at the DES department located at the Latour police station.
