Suriname joins regional dialogue on UN leadership
Suriname participated in a virtual regional dialogue on August 3, 2026, regarding the future leadership of the United Nations. The meeting was organized by Uruguay in its capacity as the current chair of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
During the session, three regional candidates presented their visions for the UN leadership: Rebeca Grynspan Mayufis (nominated by Costa Rica), María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés (nominated by Antigua and Barbuda), and Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett (nominated by Guyana). The dialogue allowed CELAC member states to discuss critical themes including peace and security, human rights, international law, youth engagement, and organizational reform.
The discussion highlighted the potential for a historic appointment, as no woman has served as UN Secretary-General since the organization's founding in 1945. Currently, seven candidates have been put forward by various nations, consisting of four women and three men.
