Suriname kaseko music prepares for UNESCO application

Suriname is preparing a UNESCO application for kaseko music, with a submission deadline set for March 31, 2027. The musical genre, along with bigi poku, holds deep cultural significance in the country, though experts note frequent confusion between the two styles. While some mistakenly believe bigi poku is simply the Sranantongo name for kaseko, it is actually an older musical style rooted in Afro-Surinamese traditions characterized by powerful rhythms and emotional lyrics.

The K.A.S.E.K.O. Museum, led by chairperson Rosita Leeflang, serves as a vital archive and educational hub to preserve this history. The museum provides access to historical gramophone records and hosts lectures and workshops to educate the public on the evolution of these musical forms.

In addition to the UNESCO bid, Surinamese culture is gaining international visibility through upcoming projects, including eleven documentaries heading to the Netherlands and the Makandra Film Festival scheduled for November 2026.
