Suriname launches agricultural training for interior students
Ninety students from the Marowijne, Brokopondo, and Sipaliwini districts in the Surinamese interior have begun a new agricultural training program. The initiative offers pre-bachelor and bachelor-level studies designed to strengthen agricultural production and economic opportunities within these regions.
The program is a collaborative effort between the Directorate of Agricultural Development in the Interior (DAOB) of the Ministry of Regional Development, the Suriname Environmental and Mining Foundation (SEMiF), and the University of Sciences and Green Technology International (USTI). SEMiF is providing the funding for the project.
To facilitate learning without requiring constant travel to Paramaribo, USTI has established specialized study hubs in Marowijne and Brokopondo. These hubs serve as digital learning centers equipped with internet access, laptops, and printing facilities, allowing students to attend online lessons collectively. Cyrano Asoiti, Deputy Director of Agriculture at DAOB, emphasized that the knowledge gained should be used to increase local production and enhance the earning capacity of residents in the interior.
