Suriname launches Heritage Month 2026 cultural initiatives
Suriname is hosting various cultural initiatives under the banner of Heritage Month 2026, including the “Dis’ Na Wi Stories: Become the Next StoryMaker” national video competition. Funded by the World Bank and organized by the Ministries of EZOTI and TCT, the competition encourages citizens aged 18 and older to create short videos that promote a positive and responsible image of the country.
In conjunction with these celebrations, the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS) organized a youth dialogue focused on heritage, identity, and national formation. The event brought together individuals aged 18 to 35 to discuss diversity, history, and how different ethnic groups coexist, aiming to foster a continuous conversation about Surinamese identity.
Despite these cultural efforts, concerns remain regarding the structural stability of the tourism sector. The entire Supervisory Board of the Suriname Tourism Authority recently resigned, citing a lack of essential conditions, including the failure to release a legally mandated starting capital of SRD 15 million and a lack of structural consultation.
