Suriname launches national Gold Authority to curb illegal mining

President Jennifer Geerlings‑Simons announced the creation of a national Gold Authority that will place the entire gold value chain under state supervision. The reform aims to stop uncontrolled gold exports, increase revenue for the treasury and improve security in mining areas where armed groups and criminal activity have been prevalent.

Minister of Natural Resources David Abiamofo defended a recent operation against illegal gold mining in the Matawai region, stressing the need for a safe, responsible and sustainable small‑scale mining sector. The government is working with the planetGOLD programme, the Inter‑American Development Bank and local communities to promote mercury‑free extraction, better registration of mining activities and greater transparency.
